Anger Management

Do you find yourself saying things in the heat of the moment that you later regret? Have you found that your anger seems to take over at times? Or perhaps a loved one seems to be unable to manage his/her temper. Anger is a normal and even protective emotion, but it needs to be dealt with in a healthy way. If not properly managed, anger can disrupt relationships, end careers, and negatively affect your health.

A common misperception of anger management is that the counselling process focuses only upon the suppression of anger. At Synergy Counselling, we recognize that anger has a purpose and we will strive to help you develop a healthier relationship with your emotions, particularly the expression of anger, and ways to keep anger from getting out of control.

In order to provide comprehensive anger management services, we will begin the first session with a look into factors that may be contributing to your anger management issues. Understanding the causes of anger management issues will help to focus the direction of the counselling and will help you to be more aware of your personal triggers. Common causes of anger problems include social learning from family members, having experienced abuse, problems with self-esteem, stress, poor sleep, and communication problems.

Once we have a clearer understanding of the causes that developed the anger issues, we will work with you at developing a detailed treatment plan suited to your individual needs. For example, if your primary area of frustration is related to managing conflicts with loved ones, we will assist you in learning communication techniques that will lead to positive outcomes with even the most difficult conversations. Or perhaps your anger is related to negative thought patterns, such as overgeneralizing: “My husband ALWAYS leaves the toilet seat up” or “My boss NEVER acknowledges my hard work”.

Our counsellors are trained in a variety of evidence-based practice approaches for helping you to successfully manage anger. These approaches include:
